Audi S5 Common Problems, Service Intervals & Fault Codes (2008–2016)
Share
Introduction
The Audi S5 (2008–2016) is a stunning grand tourer combining sharp looks with potent performance. Whether you have the 4.2 V8, 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6, or 3.0 TDI diesel, there are a number of known issues to be aware of. This guide covers the most common S5 problems, the recommended service schedule, and typical fault codes.
Common Problems with the Audi S5 (2008–2016)
1. Carbon Build-Up on Intake Valves (3.0 TFSI)
Direct injection engines like the 3.0 TFSI are prone to carbon deposits building up on the intake valves over time, causing rough idling, misfires, and reduced performance. A walnut blast clean every 40,000–60,000 miles is the recommended fix.
2. Timing Chain Tensioner Failure (4.2 V8)
The 4.2 FSI V8 has a known issue with timing chain tensioner failure, which can cause a rattling noise on startup. Left unaddressed, this can lead to catastrophic engine damage. Early diagnosis is critical.
3. Supercharger Nose Cone Failure (3.0 TFSI)
The supercharger nose cone on the 3.0 TFSI can fail, causing a whining noise and loss of boost. This is a known issue and replacement nose cone kits are widely available.
4. DSG/S Tronic Gearbox Judder
Some S5 owners with the dual-clutch S Tronic gearbox report a shudder at low speeds, particularly when pulling away. A mechatronic unit software update or fluid change often resolves this.
5. Oil Consumption
Both the 4.2 V8 and 3.0 TFSI engines can consume oil between services. Checking the oil level every 1,000 miles is strongly recommended.
Audi S5 Service Intervals
- Engine oil & filter: Every 12 months or 10,000 miles (use Audi-approved 5W-30 longlife oil)
- Air filter: Every 2 years or 20,000 miles
- Spark plugs: Every 4 years or 40,000 miles
- Brake fluid: Every 2 years
- Coolant: Every 5 years
- DSG/S Tronic fluid: Every 40,000 miles (despite Audi's "lifetime fill" claim, regular changes are strongly recommended)
- Supercharger oil (3.0 TFSI): Every 40,000 miles
- Timing chain: Inspect at 60,000 miles on the 4.2 V8; replace if any rattle is present
Common Audi S5 Fault Codes
- P0016 / P0017 – Crankshaft/camshaft position correlation. Often linked to timing chain stretch on the 4.2 V8.
- P0300–P0308 – Random/multiple cylinder misfire. Check for carbon build-up on intake valves or ignition coil faults.
- P2293 – Fuel pressure regulator performance. Common on the 3.0 TFSI; check the high-pressure fuel pump.
- P0234 – Turbo/supercharger overboost. Check the supercharger nose cone and bypass valve on the 3.0 TFSI.
- P17BF – S Tronic mechatronic adaptation. Often resolved with a gearbox software update.
