BMW 3 Series 320i G20/G21 Common Problems, Service Intervals & Fault Codes (2019–2022)
Share
Introduction
The BMW 3 Series G20/G21 (2019–2022) represents the seventh generation of BMW's iconic executive saloon and estate, bringing sharper dynamics, a more premium interior, and a range of efficient turbocharged engines. The 320i in particular is a popular choice for its balance of performance and economy. This guide covers the most common G20 320i problems, the recommended service schedule, and typical fault codes.
Common Problems with the BMW 3 Series 320i G20/G21 (2019–2022)
1. B48 Engine Oil Consumption
The B48 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine can consume oil between services, particularly during the running-in period. BMW considers up to 1 litre per 1,000 miles acceptable, but checking the oil level monthly is strongly recommended.
3. iDrive Infotainment Glitches
Some owners report the iDrive system freezing, rebooting, or losing wireless CarPlay connectivity. A software update from a BMW dealer usually resolves these issues.
3. Mild Hybrid (MHEV) System Warnings
The 48V mild hybrid system on some 320i variants can trigger warning lights related to the belt alternator starter (BAS) or the 48V battery. These often require dealer diagnosis.
4. Tyre Wear
The G20's performance-oriented suspension setup can cause uneven or accelerated tyre wear, particularly on the rear axle. Regular tyre rotation and alignment checks are important.
5. Parking Sensor and Camera Faults
Parking sensor failures and rear camera image quality issues have been reported, often caused by moisture ingress into the sensor or camera housing.
BMW 3 Series 320i G20 Service Intervals
The G20 uses BMW's Condition Based Servicing (CBS) system, which calculates service intervals based on driving conditions. As a general guide:
- Engine oil & filter: Every 12 months or when CBS prompts (typically 10,000–16,000 miles; use BMW-approved 0W-30 or 5W-30 longlife oil)
- Microfilter (cabin air filter): Every 2 years or as prompted by CBS
- Brake fluid: Every 2 years
- Spark plugs: Every 4 years or 40,000 miles
- Coolant: Every 4 years
- DSC/brake inspection: As prompted by CBS
Common BMW 3 Series 320i G20 Fault Codes
- P0011 / P0021 – Camshaft position timing over-advanced. Often related to oil quality or a VANOS solenoid fault.
- P0171 / P0174 – System too lean (Bank 1/Bank 2). Check for intake leaks or a faulty MAF sensor.
- P0300–P0304 – Random/multiple cylinder misfire. Check spark plugs and ignition coils.
- P0420 – Catalyst system efficiency below threshold. The catalytic converter or lambda sensor may need attention.
- 4B85 – Belt alternator starter (BAS) fault. Related to the 48V mild hybrid system; requires dealer diagnosis.
