Nissan Micra K12 Common Problems, Service Intervals & Fault Codes (2002–2010)
Share
Introduction
The Nissan Micra K12 (2002–2010) is a popular and economical city car that earned a strong reputation for reliability and low running costs. It's a favourite first car and urban runabout across the UK. However, like any ageing vehicle, there are a number of known issues to be aware of. This guide covers the most common Micra K12 problems, the recommended service schedule, and typical fault codes.
Common Problems with the Nissan Micra K12 (2002–2010)
1. CVT Transmission Failure
The continuously variable transmission (CVT) fitted to many K12 Micras is one of the most commonly reported issues. Symptoms include juddering, slipping, or a complete failure to drive. CVT fluid changes are often neglected and can accelerate wear. Replacement CVTs are available but can be costly.
2. Catalytic Converter Failure
The catalytic converter on the 1.0 and 1.2 petrol engines can fail prematurely, triggering the engine management light and causing a drop in performance. This is a well-known issue on the K12.
3. Power Steering Pump Noise
A whining or groaning noise from the power steering pump is a common complaint, particularly on cold starts. Low power steering fluid or a worn pump are the usual causes.
4. Rear Beam Axle Corrosion
The rear torsion beam axle is prone to corrosion, particularly in areas where road salt is used. Regular inspection and treatment with rust inhibitor is recommended.
5. Idle Speed Issues
Rough or erratic idling is often caused by a dirty throttle body or idle air control valve. Cleaning these components usually resolves the issue without the need for replacement parts.
Nissan Micra K12 Service Intervals
- Engine oil & filter: Every 12 months or 9,000 miles (use 5W-30 semi-synthetic)
- Air filter: Every 2 years or 18,000 miles
- Spark plugs: Every 2 years or 18,000 miles
- CVT fluid: Every 25,000 miles (use Nissan NS-2 CVT fluid — do not use generic ATF)
- Brake fluid: Every 2 years
- Coolant: Every 5 years
- Timing chain: Inspect at 60,000 miles; replace if any rattle is present on startup
Common Nissan Micra K12 Fault Codes
- P0420 – Catalyst system efficiency below threshold. The catalytic converter is likely failing and needs replacement.
- P0300–P0304 – Random/multiple cylinder misfire. Check spark plugs, ignition coils, and fuel injectors.
- P0171 – System too lean (Bank 1). Inspect for vacuum leaks or a dirty MAF sensor.
- P0717 – Turbine/input shaft speed sensor — no signal. Often related to CVT issues.
- P1212 – TCS/ABS signal fault. Check wheel speed sensors and ABS ring.
