Nissan Note E12 Common Problems, Service Intervals & Fault Codes (2014–2019)

Introduction

The Nissan Note E12 (2014–2019) is a practical and fuel-efficient family hatchback that's earned a strong reputation for reliability. That said, there are a handful of recurring issues that owners should be aware of. This guide covers the most common Note E12 problems, the recommended service schedule, and typical fault codes you might encounter.

Common Problems with the Nissan Note E12 (2014–2019)

1. CVT Transmission Judder

Some Note E12 owners report a shudder or judder from the CVT (continuously variable transmission), particularly at low speeds. This is often caused by degraded CVT fluid and can usually be resolved with a fluid change using Nissan-approved NS-3 CVT fluid.

2. DPF Blockage (Diesel Models)

On diesel variants, the diesel particulate filter (DPF) can become blocked if the car is used predominantly for short journeys. Regular longer runs at motorway speeds help regenerate the DPF.

3. Air Conditioning Compressor Failure

A/C compressor failure is reported on some examples, often presenting as warm air from the vents or a rattling noise when the A/C is switched on.

4. Rear Suspension Noise

Knocking or creaking from the rear suspension is a known issue, typically caused by worn rear trailing arm bushes.

5. Starter Motor Failure

Some owners have experienced starter motor issues, particularly on higher-mileage cars. Slow cranking or failure to start are the typical symptoms.

Nissan Note E12 Service Intervals

  • Engine oil & filter: Every 12 months or 12,500 miles (petrol); every 12 months or 12,500 miles (diesel)
  • Air filter: Every 2 years or 25,000 miles
  • Spark plugs (petrol): Every 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • CVT fluid: Inspect every 25,000 miles; replace if discoloured or degraded
  • Brake fluid: Every 2 years
  • Coolant: Every 5 years
  • DPF (diesel): Monitor warning lights; carry out forced regeneration if blocked

Common Nissan Note E12 Fault Codes

  • P0420 – Catalyst system efficiency below threshold. The catalytic converter may be failing or the O2 sensor is faulty.
  • P0300–P0304 – Random/multiple cylinder misfire. Check spark plugs, ignition coils, and fuel injectors.
  • P0101 – Mass airflow sensor range/performance. Clean or replace the MAF sensor.
  • P0717 – Turbine/input shaft speed sensor circuit no signal. Often related to CVT issues.
  • U1000 – CAN communication line signal error. Can indicate a wiring or module fault; check battery condition first.
