Nissan Sunny B13 Common Problems, Service Intervals & Fault Codes (1993–1994)

Introduction
The Nissan Sunny B13 (1993–1994) is a dependable and economical compact saloon that built a strong reputation for reliability. As these cars age, a number of issues can emerge. This guide covers the most common Sunny B13 problems, the recommended service schedule, and typical fault codes to help you keep yours running well.
Common Problems with the Nissan Sunny B13 (1993–1994)
1. Distributor Failure
The distributor on the GA and SR engines is a known weak point. A failing distributor can cause hard starting, misfires, or a complete no-start condition. Replacement distributors are widely available and straightforward to fit.
2. Idle Speed Hunting
Erratic or hunting idle is commonly caused by a dirty or faulty idle air control (IAC) valve. Cleaning the IAC valve and throttle body often resolves the issue without the need for replacement parts.
3. Coolant Leaks
Older B13s can develop coolant leaks from the water pump, thermostat housing, and radiator hoses. Regular coolant level checks and hose inspections are essential on high-mileage examples.
4. Rust
Sills, wheel arches, and the underside of the boot floor are the most common rust spots on the B13. Early treatment with rust converter and protective coating can prevent further deterioration.
5. Worn Suspension Bushes
Front lower arm bushes and rear trailing arm bushes wear over time, causing vague steering and knocking from the suspension. Replacement bush kits are inexpensive and widely available.

Common Nissan Sunny B13 Fault Codes
The B13 uses an early OBD-I system. Fault codes are retrieved by counting flashes from the ECU diagnostic LED rather than an OBD-II reader. Common codes include:
- Code 11 – Crankshaft position sensor fault. Check the sensor and wiring.
- Code 12 – Mass airflow sensor fault. Clean or replace the MAF sensor.
- Code 21 – Ignition signal fault. Check the distributor and ignition module.
- Code 31 – ECU fault. May indicate a failing ECU or wiring issue.
- Code 43 – Throttle position sensor fault. Check the TPS adjustment and wiring.
